How can I change my car insurance to another state?

Hi! I'm moving from New Jersey to California next month. Can you walk me through how to change my car insurance to another state?

We hope the big move goes well! Be sure to call your insurance agent in order to change your car insurance to a new state.
During this call, you will need to:
  • Ask if your current company offers coverage in your new state
  • Ask if your new state minimum laws differ from your old state minimum laws
  • Ex: New Jersey drivers must carry
    personal injury protection
(PIP), but this coverage is optional in
    California
  • Ask if you need to purchase additional coverage in your new state
  • Ask for a new quote
  • Provide your new address
After you transfer your insurance information to your new state, you will also need to get a new driver’s license and transfer your registration to your new address. Each state has a different grace period for getting this done.
In California, you will have:
  • 10 days to get a California driver’s license
  • 20 days to transfer your vehicle registration to your new address
Depending on the circumstances, you might need to purchase a new policy when you move. In this case,
