Does USAA renters insurance cover carpet replacement?

My husband and I are in the military and live in an off-base rental house. Last night, a pipe burst and wrecked the carpeting in the family room along with some of our furniture. I assume our personal possessions are covered, but does USAA renters insurance cover carpet replacement?

Sorry to hear about what happened to you; recovering from water damage can be stressful. USAA renters insurance covers your personal possessions, but not carpeting—unless the carpeting consists of area rugs that you brought into the house. In that case, the area rugs would be considered as part of your personal property. If the carpeting was installed by your landlord, she will file a claim with her own insurance company to replace the carpet.
A final note about carpet damage: If a tenant causes damage to wall-to-wall carpeting through their own negligence (or that of a pet), their renters insurance policy won’t pay to have the carpeting replaced. In your case, it doesn’t sound as if the burst water pipe was caused by anything you did, so you’re covered.
Here’s to a speedy recovery from the water damage.
