Does the Toyota Highlander come in manual transmission?
I have twin 4 year old boys who ride in car seats in the rear seats. I’m driving them around constantly, which is fine because I love to drive, but I miss driving stick. I’m looking for a new ride to haul them around—does the Toyota Highlander come in manual transmission?

Unfortunately, the Toyota Highlander does not come with an option for a manual transmission—an 8 speed automatic transmission paired with a 3.5 L V6 engine and 295 horsepower is standard across all trim lines.
In fact, if you’re looking for an SUV with manual transmission, your options are slim. There are just a handful of new SUVs or crossovers on the market today, as stick-shift is definitely going the way of the do-do bird. According to the math-letes in Jerry’s stats department, there are just three 2022 SUVs or crossovers that offer manual transmission, and that doesn’t include the Highlander.
They are:
- The 2022Ford Bronco, which sports a 7 speed manual transmission paired with a 2.3 L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine, sporting 300 horsepower—you can get the 4 door Bronco with stick shift for hauling the kids around
- The 2022SubaruCrosstrek, a compact crossover that boasts a 6 speed automatic mated to a 2.0 L 4 cylinder engine
- A 2022MiniClubman, which has a 6 speed manual gearbox along with a 2.0 L turbocharged 4 cylinder engine
Slim pickings, indeed—you might want to stick with the smooth-shifting automatic Highlander for trips with the kids.
