Does my home insurance cover people living in the house who are not family?

I've offered to let my friend stay at my place until he finds work and gets back on his feet. Will my home insurance cover him?

Your home insurance only covers you and your family. The policy is not extended to others living in your home. This is because you do not have what’s called “insurable interest” in the belongings of other people who are not family. Insurable interest involves having a financial stake in something, and you would suffer a loss if it were damaged or destroyed. You can only insure what you have an insurable interest in.
