Does renters insurance cover acts of God?

I’m renting my first apartment and looking for the right renters insurance. My parents said I need coverage for “acts of God,” but I’m not sure what that means. Does renters insurance cover acts of God?

Congratulations on renting your first apartment, that’s a big achievement!
When it comes to
renters insurance
, the phrase “acts of God” isn’t used within policies. Acts of God refers to any sudden, unexpected events outside of human control that cannot be prevented or predicted.
Instead, renters insurance policies list out the specific perils that will and will not be covered. Events that are covered are known as named perils and those that aren’t are exclusions. For example, most renters policies will cover events such as fire, windstorms, and theft, but floods and earthquakes are excluded from coverage.
Coverage will vary by insurance company, so you’ll have to read over your policy documents or contact your provider to see what you’re covered for.
