Does home insurance cover hot water heaters?

We just moved to our new home in last week, and now the water heater is broken. It’s pretty old, so I think it’s time for a replacement. Will my home insurance cover a new hot water heater?

Congratulations on the new home! Your home insurance will cover hot water heaters if the cause of damage was a covered peril.
That said, age and normal wear and tear aren’t
covered perils
. Common covered perils include:
  • Fire
  • Lightning
  • Wind
  • Sudden and accidental tearing, cracking, or burning
  • Falling objects
You’ll want to review your homeowner’s policy to be sure, but you’ll likely need to replace the hot water heater yourself.
If the damage was from a covered peril, you can submit a claim with your home insurance company for repairs or replacement. If you have a deductible, you’ll be responsible for that before your insurance company covers anything.
After submitting a claim, your insurance rates can increase. If this happens or you’d like to explore other coverage options, use the
