Once you become a USAA car insurance policyholder, you will receive an insurance ID card that serves as your proof of insurance. This insurance ID can be accessed through the USAA website or on the app.
Whether you get homeowner’s insurance, renter’s insurance, or life insurance from USAA (or any provider), chances are you won’t be required to show proof of insurance regularly. However, most states will require drivers to have proof of insurance whenever they drive. Thankfully, USAA provides a
car insurance
card so that you can have it handy at all times.
Here’s a guide to getting your USAA insurance ID card!

How to get your USAA auto insurance ID card

Getting your insurance ID card from USAA is simple—just visit their website and log in to your account! You’ll be able to download a copy or request a copy by mail. • Online: Log in to your USAA account and select “My account summary”. Then you can click the auto insurance link and select “Get Proof of Auto Insurance (Auto ID Cards)”.
  • App: Select “Auto insurance policy” and tap “Get auto ID cards” to choose your vehicle and view the ID card.
  • Mail: You can request a physical ID copy if you don’t have a printer. This can be done online through your USAA account, the app, or by calling an agent at 800-531-USAA (8722)
If you decide to purchase your insurance policy from USAA, a link to your ID card will be sent to the email you’ve provided. Try to download and print it out as soon as possible to keep it as

in your car.

What’s included on your USAA insurance card

Your USAA ID card is used to show that you are indeed carrying the minimum level of insurance coverage mandated by your state—it is your proof of financial responsibility. While your insurance card won’t indicate what coverage you have, it will include the following information:
  • Your insurance company name and address (i.e., USAA)
  • The company’s NAIC (National Association of Insurance Commissioners) number
  • Your first and last name (under “named insured”)
  • The make, model, and vehicle identification number (VIN) of your car
  • Your policy’s effective date and expiration date

During a traffic stop, drivers in every state, aside from
New Mexico
, can show electronic proof of insurance through their phones. If you get pulled over, you can simply show your insurance ID on the USAA app, along with your driver’s license and registration.
With the move towards digitization, most major car insurance companies, including USAA,
Allstate
,
GEICO
, and
State Farm
, provide digital ID cards as well as physical auto insurance cards to their customers. Drivers no longer have to worry about forgetting their proof of insurance when they drive and running into trouble with law enforcement if they forget to carry proper documentation.
