Does home insurance cover cracks in a foundation?

I moved into an older home two years ago. Recently we noticed some water coming in our basement and it looks like it’s due to cracks in our foundation. We have a home insurance policy. Would home insurance cover cracks in a foundation?

I’m sorry to hear about the water and cracking. While cracking is often unexpected, home insurance does not typically cover cracks in a foundation.
Almost all
home insurance
policies exclude the cracking, settling, or expansion of foundations. As a house ages, it settles, and cracks can begin to form. Insurance companies exclude coverage for any damage related to:
  • Age
  • Wear and tear
  • Lack of maintenance
The only time cracking in a foundation could be covered is if damage from a
covered peril
. For example, an explosion in your home damages your foundation.
To confirm your coverage, you’ll want to review your policy’s terms and conditions and reach out to your insurance provider. An agent can go into more detail about your policy and what it covers.
