Does home insurance cover ceiling damage?
A burst water pipe in my upstairs bathroom caused a lot of damage to the dining room ceiling. My contractor says a section of the ceiling needs to be replaced, and then the entire ceiling will need repainting. Will my home insurance cover ceiling damage?

Oh no—burst pipes can cause tremendous damage. Thankfully, such damage is usually covered by standard
home insurance policies
. Because the burst pipe was sudden (and you could not predict it would happen), it’s considered a covered peril
. Your insurance company will help you pay for costs related to repairing the pipe and bathroom as well as the ceiling damage in your dining room.Home insurance won’t cover ceiling damage in the following instances:
- If the water damage was caused by your negligence: For instance, if your roof developed a leak because you did not maintain it, the insurance company will not cover the damage.
- If the damage was the result of a flood or earthquake Standard policies do not cover these perils. However, you can add supplemental flood insurance and earthquake insurance.
- If you left a house vacant: Unsupervised pipes can freeze and then burst, causing ceiling damage. Insurance will not cover this instance.
It sounds as if this will be a straightforward claim on your end. Best of luck repairing the damage to your dining room’s ceiling.
