Does an electric car come with a charger?
I’m thinking about buying an electric car but I don’t know anything about charging them. Do electric cars come with chargers that I plug in at home or do I have to buy one separately?

So you’re thinking about taking the plunge into the
electric car
revolution and breaking up with the gas pump. Very nice. And yes! Electric cars DO come with a charger. The question then becomes about the types of charge and your personal expectation. There are two general types of chargers:
- 120-volt, level one portable chargers come with every electric vehicle. Nifty, right? These chargers can be plugged into any household outlet to get your vehicle going.
- 240-volt, level two chargers are an added expense that will shorten the length of time it takes to charge your vehicle. These can be purchased separately and installed in your home.
The 120-volt level one charger that comes with your car is sometimes referred to as a “trickle” charge. If you’re only commuting a short distance every day, it’ll work for you. However, for longer commutes, you’ll want to think about a level two charger which gets you about 17 miles per hour charged.
Another alternative is to use your 120-volt charger to give you enough juice to then top your car off at a nearby station where a faster charge will be available.
