Do the police know who is driving a rental car?

My friend was pulled over while driving a rental car and the police officer was very suspicious of whether she was the person who was authorized to drive it. Although the officer eventually took her word that she was the legal renter of the car, this situation has me wondering—how can the police know who is driving a rental car?

I’m sorry to hear your friend was in a tricky situation. While the police don’t know who is driving a rental car just by running the rental license plate, if an officer pulls over the car and suspects that it’s not being driven by the person who rented it, they can check.
By looking up the license plate, the officer will see which rental service the car is registered to. If they want confirmation of the name of who rented the vehicle in question they will call the rental company and check. If the name on your driver’s license doesn’t match the name of the renter the company has on file—you’ll be busted.
It’ll be up to the officer’s discretion whether he wants to ticket you for whatever they pulled you over for in the first place. As far as the rental service goes, the driver who is on the contract may end up being blacklisted from renting a car there again due to breach of contract.
