I’ll be moving to Maryland for college next year and I’m trying to figure out what all I need to do to keep my car legal. Do I need to get a Maryland smog check when I move there?

Whether or not you’re required to get a smog check or vehicle emissions test in Maryland depends on which county you move to. Not all counties in the state require emissions testing, but those that do require it every two years.
Here are the counties in Maryland where drivers need emissions tests to keep their cars legal:
  • Anne Arundel
  • Baltimore
  • Frederick
  • Montgomery
  • Prince George’s
  • Calvert
  • Carroll
  • Cecil
  • Charles
  • Harford
  • Howard
  • Queen Anne’s
  • Washington
Whether you get a Maryland smog test or not also depends on the model year of your vehicle. Passenger vehicles from 1995 or earlier typically aren’t required to get checked.
If your car is a 1996 model or newer and you’re moving to one of the counties listed above, you’ll want to locate a vehicle emissions testing center to get your car checked out. You’ll also want to make sure your car insurance meets or exceeds
Maryland’s minimum car insurance laws
.
