Do I need a driver’s license to drive a scooter?

My driver’s license is about to expire and I’m thinking of selling my car to buy a scooter instead. It seems like an easier way to get around since I live in a big city, but I’m not sure if I can drive one if I let my license expire. Do I need a driver’s license to drive a scooter?

Congrats on your exciting transition from car to scooter! It’s true that they can be great in big cities where parking is scarce. That said, every state has different laws for scooters, and scooters come with different engine sides and max speeds. Most require you to have a driving license to drive a scooter.
Here’s what you need to know:
  • Most states have different rules for scooters with small engines (under 50cc) versus larger engines (greater than 50cc)
  • Some states require motorcycle licenses or endorsements to drive a scooter
  • A few states do not require any kind of driver’s license to drive a small scooter
In short, you’ll need to check your state’s laws to learn the full situation. But regardless of whether you cruise around in a scooter or car, you’ll want the best
