Do Driving Glasses Work?
I’m always bothered by glare when I drive at night. Will driving glasses work to help my night vision?

They might look cool, but driving glasses almost certainly will not work to improve your night vision behind the wheel. At least one study shows that driving glasses can make your night vision worse as opposed to improving it.
Here’s what we know about using driving glasses at night:
- They reduce light: While this may seem like a good thing, the fact that driving glasses reduce the light going into your eye is in fact the opposite—this diminishes visibility, as the less light coming into your eye under dark or dim conditions means your vision will worsen, not improve
- Evidence points to the opposite: At least one study determined that driving glasses slow down visual reflexes by about a fraction of a second rather than improving them (and improving your night vision)
So if those slick, yellow-tinted glasses won’t help you see at night, how can you improve your night vision? Here are a few suggestions:
- **Keep your eyeglass prescriptions up to date
- **Ask your optometrist for an anti-reflective coating on your glasses to cut down on glare
- **Keep your glasses clean
- **Keep your windshield (both inside and out) clean
- **Dim your dashboard lights when driving at night to reduce eyestrain
- **If your eyes are still bothering you and night vision is a problem, talk to your doctor
