Can you wear flip flops while driving a commercial vehicle?

I drive commercial vehicles for a living, and sometimes, after a while, my feet get hot in my boots. Whenever I stop for gas, I usually take off my shoes and put on flip flops to cool down my feet. Is it legal to drive a commercial vehicle with flip flops on?

With long hours on the road dealing with different weather conditions, it’s understandable as to why you’d want to know what you can and cannot wear while working.
Technically, you can wear flip flops while driving a commercial vehicle. In fact, you can wear any type of footwear you choose.
No federal DOT laws prohibit certain footwear—so you could even drive barefoot. However, you may want to consider wearing closed-toe shoes for safety reasons. If your flip flops were to get caught in the pedal and cause an accident, you could face a reckless driving charge.
In addition, wearing proper footwear can also help avoid serious injuries. If you were to drop something heavy on your foot, stub your toe, or something worse, you could hurt yourself and be unable to work altogether.
Safety is essential—whether you’re driving a commercial vehicle or your personal car. Protect yourself with great
