Can you turn right on a red light in Maine?
I am going on a road trip to Maine with my friends in a few weeks and want to ensure I know the driving laws. Is turning right on a red light in Maine legal?

Knowing the driving laws before you head to a new state is the best way to avoid fines! You can turn right on a red in Maine unless there is official signage indicating the turn is prohibited. But before you turn, remember to yield the right-of-way to crosswalk pedestrians and other traffic in the intersection.
However, do note that a municipality or the DOT can prohibit a right turn on red in certain situations, such as:
- Proximity to schools, fire stations, residences, or institutions for the blind
- High-volume crosswalks
- Intersection complexity
If turning red on a right is not permitted, a sign will indicate it is illegal. If there is no sign, a driver may turn right as long as:
- They have come to a complete stop and signaled their intent to turn right
- There is no sign prohibiting turning right on a red
- The driver yields the right-of-way to pedestrians and other drivers who have a green signal
If there is a red steady arrow, drivers are not permitted to make a right turn. If the arrow is red and flashing, the driver may proceed with their right turn as if the arrow is a stop sign. When a red and yellow light is illuminated simultaneously, turning right into the intersection is also prohibited.
