Can you take the written driving test online in Texas?

I live in Texas and don’t want to wait in line for my knowledge test. Is online testing available?

Yes—you can do the written knowledge test online for your
Texas driver’s license
with a Texas DPS-approved driving school. Note that this usually requires you to enroll in a driver’s education course.
A typical driver’s education course will cover the following topics:
  • Safe driving techniques
  • Traffic signs and signals
  • Proper emergency vehicle procedure
  • Proper use of safety restraints
  • Dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and the consequences
Here are a few things to note about the written test:
  • If you are over 25 and do not wish to take a course, you can study the Texas Driver Handbook instead.
  • If you are over 25 and do not take the course, you must complete the written test at the DPS with an appointment.
  • To pass the written test, you will need a score of 70% or higher.
When visiting the Texas DPS, you should also bring proof of the following:
  • Proof of U.S citizenship or lawful presence
  • Proof of residency in Texas
  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of Social Security number
  • Texas vehicle registration and proof of
    Texas car insurance
    (for skills test)
Before you do your skills test, you will need to be put on an insurance policy to be an authorized driver for the vehicle you will test with. Luckily, getting
car insurance
