Can you take the written driving test online in Ohio?
We are encouraging our 16-year-old daughter to get her temporary permit to learn to drive sooner. Is she able to do the knowledge test online?

Yes, the written knowledge test is now available online in Ohio as of June, 2022. Your daughter can register for the test and find out more information by going to bmv.ohio.gov and navigating to the Driver License & ID cards tab, then selecting First Issuance.
Here is some helpful information about this new option:
- You must use a computer or laptop with a functioning webcam
- Applicants under the age of 19 must have an adult present
- The supervising adult must pass the Lexis Nexis Identity Verification process before the test
- Applicants can retake the test as many times as needed, but they must wait 24 hours between each one
The knowledge test will have 40 multiple-choice questions with a passing score of 75% and she can find the materials in the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws.
Once your daughter passes, she must go to the driver’s exam station to pass her vision test before purchasing her temporary instruction permit identification card (TIPIC) at the deputy registrar license agency. This must be done within 60 days of passing the test.
Remember to bring proof of:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Social Security number (if assigned)
- Ohio residency
- Citizenship or legal presence
The applicant’s parent or guardian (that’s you!) must present identification (driver’s license or ID card) to co-sign for the TIPIC.
