Can you go to jail for reckless driving?

I’m a pretty aggressive driver and like to drive fast. While I have never caused an accident or gotten a traffic ticket, I am concerned that my need for speed could get me into trouble. Will I go to jail if I get caught reckless driving?

We understand that you have a need for adrenaline, but the road is simply not the place for it. Most states have punishments for reckless driving that include jail time. Every state has its own definition of reckless driving with varied punishments.
Knowing the law is the first step to following the law (and staying out of jail for that matter). Although you should check your state’s laws for specifics, here are some general examples of reckless driving:
  • Excessive speeding
  • Failing to stop at red lights and stop signs
  • Racing other vehicles
  • Failing to yield the right-of-way to other vehicles and pedestrians
  • Distracted driving
  • Driving under the influence
A reckless driving conviction can also result in higher
