Can you get evicted for not having renters insurance?
My landlord is threatening to evict me for not having renters insurance. I’m not sure this is entirely legal. Could I get evicted for not having renters insurance?

Getting evicted is a renters’ worst nightmare, so I’m sure you’re stressed. If your lease states you need renters insurance, you could be evicted for not having it.
While no states currently have laws requiring renters to carry

, a lease is legally binding. If you signed a lease which states you need renters insurance, your landlord could evict you for breaking it. If your lease doesn’t state renters insurance as a requirement, and you’ve never signed anything saying you’ll get it, you can’t be evicted for not having renters insurance. You’ll want to review your lease as soon as possible to determine if renters insurance is a requirement.
Should you not find a clause stating you need renters insurance, you may want to consider reporting your landlord to your state’s Department of Housing. You have rights as a tenant, especially in the case of an unfair eviction.
