Can you flat tow a 2020 Ford Explorer?
I have a 2020 Ford Explorer that I’d love to bring camping, but we’re renting an RV, so it has to be towed behind. Can my Ford Explorer be safely towed behind our RV?

Unfortunately, you cannot flat tow a 2020 Ford Explorer. Previous model years—from 2003 to 2019— could safely be flat towed if they were FWD or had a tow kit accessory. However, all models from 2020 onwards cannot be flat towed.
The only Ford Explorers that can be safely flat towed are:
- 2003–2005 Ford Explorer (must be 4x2 RWD or 4x4 with a tow kit accessory)
- 2005–2009 Ford Explorer (must be 4x4 with tow kit accessory)
- 2010–2019 Ford Explorer (must be 2WD and have 3.5 or 3.7-liter engine)
Before you hitch your Explorer up and hit the road, always check your owner’s manual. It will tell you whether your Explorer can be towed and, if so, how to do it properly to avoid damage.
Because not all Ford Explorers are designed to be flat towed, knowing the ins and outs of your specific model is critical. On top of reading up on towing capabilities, also take a minute to update your car insurance policy to protect your Explorer on the road.
