Can I sue my HOA for discrimination?

My mother is moving in with me and we need to install a wheelchair ramp so that she can move around more independently. My HOA said they wouldn't allow us to install it in the front yard, but that doesn't seem fair. Can I sue my HOA for discrimination?

It is possible to sue your HOA for discrimination, and you might have a good case. While residents are required to follow HOA rules, these rules are not laws and can not supersede your state’s Fair Housing Laws.
Every state must follow the rules of the Fair Housing Act of 1991, where people with disabilities can ask for reasonable modifications for their dwellings. These modifications are so they can enjoy their home safely and comfortably.
For example, adding a ramp to make entering and exiting their home more accessible would fall under this guideline.
Before filing a suit, speak to the board and try to work on a compromise. It could just be that the HOA wants the ramp to be more aesthetically pleasing, or maybe attaching it on the side or back of the home would work better.
Also, take a look at your HOA bylaws to see what they state about exterior modifications. Wheelchair ramps can be expensive, so now would be a good time to ensure you get the best car or
