Can driving cause elbow pain?

I’m an outside sales representative, so I spend a lot of time on the road. Although I’m young and healthy, my elbow has been killing me lately. Is driving long distances something that could cause pain in my elbow?

Good for you for smashing those sales! And you’re right on the money with your train of thought: driving can cause elbow pain. Continuously steering and switching gears for extended periods can result in lateral epicondylitis—also known as tennis elbow.
Among those with long commutes or driving-related professions who frequently use the same muscles to drive, elbow pain is fairly common. Here are some symptoms you may be experiencing:
  • Stiffness of the forearm and elbow
  • Cold or numb hands
  • Pain when lifting objects
  • Pain in the elbow to the touch
The root of the issue stems from small tears that form where your forearm muscles connect to your arm bone. With repetitive motion and pressure, the tears worsen. The good news is becoming aware of the issue is the first step to resolving it.
With the right posture, gentle exercises, and frequent breaks from driving, you can mitigate the pain you’re feeling. Just try to breathe and be mindful while you drive to ensure you’re not adding unnecessary strain.
Since you’re spending all that time behind the wheel, be sure you’re protected by great
