Are electric vehicles lighter?

Since electric vehicles don’t have gas engines to weigh them down, are they lighter than gas-powered cars? It seems to me like they’d have to be.

Actually, you might be surprised to know that
EVs
are actually heavier than gas-powered vehicles. Wondering why? The answer is that, despite having fewer moving parts, they have other components that tack on a lot of additional weight, like their large battery packs. An EV will weigh more than its traditional counterpart primarily because of the battery.
An EV battery weighs far more than that of a traditional vehicle. EVs are powered by their lithium-ion battery packs, which require many layers of heavy metals to create the electricity needed to move the vehicle down the road. For example, GM’s Hummer EV weighs 9,000 lbs (that’s over 4 tons), while combustion Hummers usually weigh anywhere from 5,000-8,000 lbs.
However, the weight of EVs does lend some positive features to these vehicles. Unlike a gas-powered car, truck, or SUV, EVs have a lower center of gravity thanks to their massive batteries. For drivers, this may translate into better handling, as well as less body roll, and a reduced likelihood of a rollover crash.
For gas-powered vehicles, they’re often heavier in the front due to a large combustion engine that powers the vehicle. EVs may have incredibly heavy batteries, but they have small motors and transmissions.
