Volvo Will No Longer Sell The V90 Wagon in the US

For years, "Volvo" and "station wagons" have been synonymous. Since the ‘60s, the Swedish
automaker
has offered a long list of the four-door hatchback sedan in one form or another. But all that will change in the next few years.
Volvo announced its move away from the style as it transitions to a completely
electric-powered lineup
. The first step will be the discontinuation of the V60 and the V90, two of Volvo’s three gas-powered wagons.
SUVs will replace wagons in the company’s product line, though brand CEO Håkan Samuelsson says Volvo doesn’t plan to completely eradicate the category just yet.

Why Volvo plans to shift away from the station wagon

The V90 Wagon will be no more, but there will still be some station wagons
Volvo has been known as a trendsetter
in the auto industry for years. From safety feature development to adapting to electric powertrains, the company prides itself on being one step ahead of its competitors.
But Volvo is also a business that’s focused on making money, and right now, that means selling SUVs, the auto industry’s current cash cow.
Autoblog
quotes Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo’s current top dog, who says that the company’s current sales mix is about 75% SUVs.
Part of the shift is due to the growing demand for the sport-utility vehicle, but adding height to its models also makes it easier for Volvo to add the large battery packs needed for a transition to electric.

The two Volvo wagons still available in America

As previously stated, the move away from wagons won’t mean a complete elimination of the long roof from Volvo’s lineup, at least for the foreseeable future.
Motor Authority
says you will still be able to get your hands on the V60 Cross Country and its plug-in hybrid sibling, the V60 Recharge, in 2022.
According to
Motortrend
, the V60 Cross Country gives its predecessor an extra 2.5 inches off the road, standard AWD, and updated suspension tuning, along with some exterior tweaks to snazz it up a little.
The V60 Recharge still held on to its affiliation with Polestar in 2021, but the two brands seem to be differentiating themselves as the year progresses. The most recent model pairs electric motors with a turbo and supercharged four-cylinder that, combined, offer a 415-hp AWD hybrid powertrain.

Station wagons are hard to come by in today’s market, but if you want to
save on car insurance
, they’re a great choice. Buying a wagon like a Volvo V60 gives you the insurance premium savings associated with sedans while offering the leg and cargo space of an SUV.
On the other hand, most new Volvos are considered luxury vehicles, and their expensive parts will probably raise your insurance rates. To find the best price for the coverage you need, you should definitely shop around.
