background
Whenever you hear an automaker
recalling vehicles
, it should never come as a surprise. The reason is that even after initial tests, automobiles can manifest underlying issues after release into the market. When that happens, a recall is inevitable. That is the case with Ram's recent recall for over 200,000 trucks with an airbag problem.
Additionally, most vehicle recalls happen before many buyers purchase affected automobiles. The intention, in this case, is to ensure that models with underlying problems do not become a risk to owners. Otherwise, failure to take prompt action in such situations can tarnish a vehicle manufacturer's image.

Insight into the recent Ram recall

Formerly known as Fiat Chrysler, Stellantis issued a statement saying that it has recalled more than 200,000 Ram pickups due to defective side curtain airbags. The automaker indicated that moisture contaminated the inflators in the airbags during manufacturing, which may cause the airbags to rupture without deployment or even in the absence of a crash.
Additionally, Stellantis suggests that the aftermath, in this case, is the explosion of debris into the passenger cabin. According to the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
, the issue affects inflators installed in the side curtain airbags in Ram vehicles from April 2015 to mid-June 2020. Note that the inflators can burst any time whether the truck is occupied or not and even if the vehicle is running or not.
It is also worth mentioning that this recall is not an extension of the Takata airbag recall since current Ram airbag inflators use a different chemical activation system. The Takata airbag recall affected the largest number of vehicles in history. The only thing is that the firm that emerged from Takata's bankruptcy is the subcontractor responsible for building Ram's current airbag inflators.
So far, only a single report has been received of an airbag rupture in one of Ram's vehicles, and there is no news about injuries at the moment. Details of the incident suggest that the airbags ruptured in an unoccupied truck, which is why there were no injuries.

Models included in Ram's recall

The recent recall includes Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups and 3500 cab-chassis trucks from 2015 to 2020. Also, previous-generation Ram 1500 pickups, otherwise known as the Ram Classic, are part of the recall. However, the recall does not affect the current-generation 2019-2021 Ram 1500.
It is also worth mentioning that the recall includes more than 3,000 vehicles in Mexico, over 200,000 vehicles in the U.S. market, and probably more than 42,000 in Canada. Also, particular markets outside North America with over 4,500 Ram automobiles are affected by the recall.
On the other hand, although automakers try to reach every owner with news of a recall, they do not always succeed. So, checking whether your auto has any safety recalls you are yet to address is advisable. If you want to check whether your truck is part of the recent recall, you can visit the
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
recall website.
If your pickup truck is part of the recall, you should receive a call, and the faulty airbag will be replaced free of charge at a future date,

Vehicle recalls are not uncommon

First, understand that Ram's recent recall is likely not a big deal. The reason is that recalls are pretty common for every automaker.
For instance, GM recalled over 400,000 GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado pickups over the same airbags issue that Ram is addressing presently. The most interesting bit is that the inflators supplier that Ram used is the same one that supplied GM.
GM's recall happened earlier this year. Also, the Chevrolet Bolt EV has recently been recalled over a fire risk problem, and the plan is to replace the car's battery pack with a new version.
The bottom line is that vehicle recalls are not uncommon. So, Ram will only need to resolve the airbags issue before releasing the trucks requiring repairs back into the market.
