If you haven’t yet heard of the Nissan Leaf, it’s a compact five-door hatchback electric car, and one of the best-selling electric vehicles of all time.
It was first released in 2010, and has received a litany of awards ever since, mostly for being one of the most eco-friendly EVs on the market. It’s also fun to drive!
With this in mind, Nissan surprised everyone with a recent update about the 2022 Leaf. Not only will it include a 240-volt portable charge cable, CHAdeMO fast-charging, adaptive cruise control, and steering assistance, it will also cost $4,000 less than previous versions.
Consequently, many drivers will be able to take advantage of a ridiculously low
car leasing
deal of just $89 a month. That’s probably less than your cable bill!

The new 2022 Nissan Leaf is efficient and affordable.

Why is the 2022 Nissan Leaf so cheap?

As explained by
The Drive
, the 2022 Leaf’s unexpected price drop is related to a number of factors.
Firstly, the
affordable EV
space is getting more and more competitive, as major car makers begin to offer electric versions of their best-selling models.
Following the $4,000 discount you can order a brand-new Leaf for just $27,400 (or less than $19,900 if you are eligible for the $7,500 EV tax credit). It has positioned itself as the cheapest EV on the market.
Secondly, there are concerns surrounding the Leaf’s CHAdeMO fast-charge port, which will not be compatible with the CCS plugs being employed by Electrify America, the nation’s largest car charging network.
It is hoped that a discounted Leaf, especially a leased one that can be returned after a couple of years, will assuage consumer fears about this.

Where is the Nissan Leaf leasing option available?

Initially, the $89 a month lease will only be available on base trim 2022 models of the Nissan Leaf, and only in certain parts of the country. Confirmed locations include Maryland and New York State, plus major cities in Texas and California.
The Drive explains that to take advantage of the offer, you have to pay $1,449 as a downpayment and must not drive more than 20,000 miles over the course of the two year lease. This equates to just over 27 miles each day.
Considering the range of a fully-charged base model Leaf is 149 miles, this is not the car to use on your next roadtrip. It is, however, an excellent choice for running errands or a short daily commute.

The pros and cons of leasing a car

Some people are vehemently opposed to leasing, suggesting it will always cost you more than buying in the long run.
That said, leasing still accounts for almost 80% of all cars leaving the dealership, and it does make sense for some drivers.
In the pros column, lease payments are often lower than monthly payments on a new vehicle, there is no long term commitment, and you normally get full warranty coverage.
As for the cons, leasing will cost more than buying if you hold onto the car for a long time, because you are paying interest as part of your monthly payments.
You are also not allowed to alter any part of the vehicle—even superficial damage like a scratch can end up costing you more than it should, and if you want to get out of the lease early, it will cost a small fortune in penalty fees.

Most lease contracts insist you take out full insurance coverage on your leased vehicle, including comprehensive and collision insurance. While this will cost more than your state’s minimum insurance requirements, you might be surprised how affordable a complete insurance package can be.
