, the new Alexa update for Ford vehicles is supposed to offer seamless control of your car technology. If you own a Ford with Alexa built-in, what can you expect it to do?
Which Ford vehicles will have Alexa built-in?
Ford will roll out Alexa integration across their line-up and internationally over the next few years, as reported by MotorTrend. But starting this fall, you can expect Alexa to be built into these vehicles:
Commercial vehicles are also a priority because those drivers who are in their vehicles all day would benefit from this technology. Ford owners will be able to use Alexa for free for three years.
You’ll also see new technology like BlueCruise, which is a hands-free highway assistant, and the Mach-E will have Sketch for simple gaming and drawing.
You’ll be able to regularly update your Ford software through Power-Up, which will send wireless fixes and upgrades. The first updates were already sent out for the F-150 and Mach-E on March 18. You can expect another upgrade later this year.
Destination suggestions, voice recognition for search, and turn-by-turn navigation are some of the things that Alexa will help with. The virtual assistant has a wide range of uses and it’ll be able to do more as it’s upgraded. In 2017, Amazon worked with Ford to launch Alexa for their vehicles as a mobile app.
The new built-in Alexa should work seamlessly without having to push any buttons. As mentioned in MotorTrend, 76% of customers want to use the same voice assistant they use at home in their vehicles. Soon, you’ll be able to defrost your car and pay for gas with just a voice command.
The future of virtual assistants for cars
Alex Purdy, Ford’s director of operations for enterprise connectivity, said that software updates will start to be like oil changes. "We believe data is the new oil," he said. Over-the-air (OTA) updates won’t require a visit to a dealership, and means faster fixes for things like battery drains on electric cars.
These fast fixes will make Ford warranty costs cheaper for consumers, and help Ford keep in touch with their customers throughout their ownership experience. With the increase of software-related car upgrades, it’ll be interesting to see how this affects car insurance costs.
