background
Acura
has yet to join the EV race, but they’re not far behind. On August 18, they released more information on their first EV at Monterey Car Week. TheAcura Precision EV concept made waves with its unique grill light and is the first EV in their lineup expected to cruise roads in 2024.

Cruising captain’s all aboard the Acura precision EV

The Acura Precision first cropped up as a concept in 2016 as a sedan and now returns revamped and restyled as an SUV.
While similarities exist between the two, the new Acura Precision EV is full of new looks, inspired by luxury powerboats like a tumblehome. And this nautical theme has been played up in concept photos according to
Car and Driver
.
Specifically, the dual styling “driving” experience. The car is expected to have two driving styles, “Instinctive Drive” and “Spiritual Lounge.” Instinctive Drive is what you’re used to, arguably, with red lighting, engine sounds, and a
yolk-style steering wheel
.
Spiritual Lounge is new. This EV is expected to be not only performance driving aka “Instinctive drive mode” but also “
autonomous
” and that’s found via the spiritual lounge.
In this mode, the yolk and pedals retract, the displays become transparent, the seats recline, and ocean sounds, images, and “scents” fill the cabin. (No news on what scents or if there will be options. Maybe an “ocean breeze.”)
Seating is expected to be 100% biomass leather with recycled materials used throughout the rest of the interior. While this is still a concept, these interior options may change, and more details about infotainment and other interior nautical-themed gadgets may arrive later.

“Particle Glitch” and a light grill

What caught everyone’s attention when Acura announced the SUV EV Precision Concept for 2024 was the grill. Internal combustion engine vehicles use grills for a dual purpose.
First, air needs to enter under your vehicle's hood to cool the radiator and engine and keep your car from overheating; at the same time, this machinery needs to be protected from debris. Thus the grills you see on most ICE vehicles.
Grills are a normal part of vehicle design, but EVs don’t need them. While they require some cooling air to keep the batteries from overheating, it’s not nearly on the same level.
Acura decided to create their normal pentagonal grill with a twist;instead of letting air into the vehicle it now acts like a light. And it’s not the only unique light on the vehicle.
“Particle Glitch” according to Acura is the name for the lights added to the front and rear of the vehicle.
It is a mix-and-matched pattern that can also be found on the 23-inch wheel spokes. These light clusters, while having a "glitch" styling, could arguably be viewed as a small school of fish hiding away in parts of the vehicle for the sake of the theme.

Partnering with GM for full speed ahead in Acura’s EV plans

According to
the Verge
, the Acura Precision is being designed by Acura while being engineered by General Motors. Specifically, these vehicles are expected to be built at GM’s plant in Tennessee using GM’s Ultrium battery platform.
This helps Acura with its goal to be fully electric by 2040. Their shorter-term goal is for 40% of their sales to be EVs by 2030 and 80% by 2035. The
Honda Prologue
, a sibling vehicle to the Acura Precision, is also expected to be built in partnership with GM.
