What is a yoke steering wheel?

I want to buy a Tesla for commuting because my state has some really great electric vehicle incentives, but I saw a lot of people didn’t like the Model S because it had a yoke steering wheel. What is a yoke steering wheel? Is it a lot different than a regular steering wheel?

At first glance, a yoke steering wheel looks like something that belongs in a jet plane instead of a sedan. But
Tesla
made the yoke steering wheel mandatory on their
Model S Plaid
. Even though it looks undeniably cool, there is a bit of a learning curve to using a yoke steering wheel.
Here’s a better idea of the pros and cons of a yoke steering wheel:
Pros
Cons
Forces driver’s hands to optimal safety position
Touchscreen buttons can be missed
Better visibility over the wheel
Takes a while to adjust to using
Removes stalk clutter from wipers, turn signals, etc.
No top rim of the wheel—some drivers might grab for it on instinct
If you don’t mind learning how to use a yoke steering wheel, the Model S Plaid is a great choice for you. However, if you’d rather stick with a traditional steering wheel, you can choose the regular Model S.
