Car critics and enthusiasts are anxiously awaiting the New York Auto Show. On April 13, 2022, the winner of the World Car of the Year award will be announced. The top three finalists were announced with one month to spare. This year, it’s all electric cars.
The finalists of this category certainly indicate current market trends and technologies. Although there are some powerful and exciting plug-in
hybrid
options available, the finalists are all electric crossovers. This is a first in the history of the awards, and possibly rules out the presence of any combustion engines making the list at all next year. As demand rises,
car brands
across the board are shifting production to electric cars.

The World Car of the Year awards

The
World Car Awards
have been running annually since 2005. They intend “to recognize, reward and inspire automotive excellence, leadership and innovation in a rapidly changing automotive industry on a global scale.”
The awards are separated into six categories: World Electric Vehicle of the Year, World Urban Car, World Luxury Car, World Performance Car, World Car Design of the Year, and World Car of the Year.
The winners for 2022 will be announced in April at the New York Auto Show, with one million visitors expected. Over 100 global jurors test drive and vote to determine the winners.
Eligible vehicles for the World Car of the Year award must be new or fully redesigned, with at least 10,000 units produced every year. These vehicles must be available in at least two major markets between January 2021 and March 2022, and priced below the luxury-car level.

The finalists are all electric cars

It’s no surprise that the finalists for the World Car of the Year award are all sporty, high-riding crossovers, as highlighted by
InsideEVs
. There is a high demand for crossovers at the moment, so it makes sense that the best options would be electric cars.
Representing the U.S. is the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The other two finalists are Korean models that share the same platform: The Kia EV6, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5.
According to
Motor1
, the Kia EV6 differs from its sister with a GT model that produces 576 hp. It’s already been crowned European Car of the Year for 2022, and it’s also in the running for the World Car Design of the Year category.
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is also a finalist for World Car Design of the Year, and World Electric Vehicle of the Year. Its design is more polarizing and geared towards comfort, so these two electric cars definitely differ aesthetically.
