background
To receive a
Wisconsin
motorcycle license—also called a Class M license—you must first pass a knowledge, vision, and road signs test to get an instruction permit. Once you have an instruction permit, you must either pass a motorcycle skills test or take an approved rider course to waive the skills test.
Motorcycles are fun to drive and a great way to get around. But motorcycle safety is hugely important no matter what state you drive in. Wisconsin requires anyone looking to obtain their motorcycle license to complete a series of mandatory steps before they’re free and clear to hit the open road.

Do you need a license to operate a motorcycle in Wisconsin?

Yes. To drive a motorcycle on Wisconsin roads, you must have a Class M license endorsement.
Wisconsin state law defines a motorcycle as a two or three-wheeled motorbike capable of reaching speeds greater than 30 miles per hour. Motorbikes that aren’t capable of driving faster than 30 miles per hour are considered mopeds. You do not need a Class M license to operate a moped.
You must be 16 or older to apply for a motorcycle license in Wisconsin. Motorcycle drivers under the age of 18 must have a sponsor (a parent or legal guardian) and have completed a state-approved Driver’s Education course or already hold a probationary driver's license.

How to add a motorcycle endorsement to your Wisconsin driver’s license

The first step to adding a motorcycle endorsement to your license in Wisconsin is by obtaining an instruction permit. You’ll receive your motorcycle instruction permit when you pass these screenings:
Your instruction permit is good for six months. If more than six months pass before you obtain your motorcycle endorsement, you’ll have the option to renew it. You can renew the instruction permit twice if it expires, but after that, you’ll also need to show that you enrolled in the
Basic Motorcycle RiderCourse (BRC)
If you’re under 18 and looking to get your instruction permit, you must complete or show proof of enrollment in BRC before you test for a permit.
The instruction permit allows you to practice driving your motorcycle prior to being licensed. As a permit-holder, you must always follow these restrictions:
  • Wear a helmet and eye protection
  • Only drive after dark in the company of a licensed motorcycle driver who is at least 25 years old with two years or more of motorcycle driving experience.
For drivers over the age of 18, once you have your permit you’ll have the option of either taking a DMV road test or taking the BRC. If you choose to take the motorcycle road test you must make an appointment and bring the following:
  • An insured, registered motorcycle in good road condition
  • An approved helmet and eye protection
If you complete the BRC, you’re eligible for a test waiver. These waivers are sent to the DMV electronically, but you should still bring a copy with you when you go to the DMV to get your Class M motorcycle license endorsement.
