A short history of RAM ownership
Before its birth in 2009, RAM was owned by Dodge, a subsidiary of Chrysler. Dodge was one of the first automobile producers in the United States.
Dodge was originally founded in 1900 as the Dodge Brothers Company. It was chosen to manufacture a wide variety of components for the Model A Ford by Henry Ford.
Dodge spent the first decade of its life bouncing between Oldsmobile and Ford, producing engines and transmissions.
In 1913, the company was rebranded as the Dodge Brothers Motor Company and began producing its own car in 1914. Dodge built its reputation and production quality over the years, and by 1920 it was the second most popular automobile manufacturer in America. That same year, both Dodge brothers passed away.
Shortly after the brothers’ death, the company began focusing production on light trucks. The company signed a deal with the Graham brothers and released trucks under that brand until Dodge was purchased by Chrysler Company in 1927.
RAM came to be in 2009 after Chrysler filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy and was offloaded by Daimler Chrysler to Fiat. The decision to split RAM off from Dodge was made so that the truck producer could focus on creating vehicles for serious truck drivers who were looking for power and performance over image and style.
In 2021, Fiat merged with the French PSA Group to form Stellantis, which maintains ownership of the RAM brand today.
