The gas tax is used to fund road, highway, and infrastructure repair, but the state’s own Department of Transportation says it has roughly $15 billion in backlogged repairs that it claims the current gas tax can’t meet. Even though the state government is talking about a higher gas tax to help with those repairs, there is no indication currently that a gas tax hike is being considered in Louisiana.
