How to find the cheapest car insurance quotes in Louisiana
Shopping for car insurance in Louisiana can feel like navigating a treacherous swamp of high prices, shady companies, and tricky terminology. Cheapest car insurance companies in Louisiana
To narrow down the best car insurance options for Louisiana drivers, Jerry conducted the largest insurance shopping survey in the nation. We asked over 15,000 policyholders from across the country to rate their insurance providers on cost, customer service, ease of shopping and renewal, and claims handling.
While State Farm, Progressive, and Allstate hold the largest market share in Louisiana according to the Louisiana Department of Insurance, actual drivers in our survey gave the highest rates to slightly smaller companies like Nationwide, National General, Louisiana Farm Bureau, and Southern Farm Bureau. Out of the big-name players, only Allstate came through with a perfect five-star rating in every category.
Here’s what the survey respondents had to say about the best car insurance companies in Louisiana:
Insurance Company | Date | Cost rating (out of 5) | What our customer said: |
---|---|---|---|
Anchor General | October 16, 2024 | 5 | “Nothing bad to say except getting a lot of requests about things I already turned in but turns out they finally fixed it” – Kenneth |
Bristol West | October 15, 2024 | 5 | “They seem to be very straight to the point and understanding” – Wesley |
Infinity | October 7, 2024 | 3 | “Never had enquiry with them” – Winifred |
Madison Mutual | October 5, 2024 | 5 | “I wasn’t sure how to go about full coverage insurance. I usually just do liability, but my rates were only a little higher for full coverage” – Eleanor |
Freedom National | October 4, 2024 | 5 | “They are great insurance providers, they have low prices. I would definitely recommend to my friends and family.” – Harriet |
How’d we get these scores?
Jerry’s experts conducted one of the largest car insurance surveys in the United States. We surveyed 15,000 policyholders, in all 50 states, over the span of 18 months. These policyholders hold insurance policies with 87 different insurance companies. We surveyed policyholders to gauge their satisfaction with their insurance carriers in: policy cost, customer service, buying and renewal experience, as well as claim experience. These scores were all reported by real customers of the insurance companies.
As you can see, there are a lot of variables to consider when picking an insurance company—which is why Jerry exists to simplify the process. Jerry is a trusted insurance broker with a user-friendly app and a customer service team of 100+ licensed insurance agents to help you find the cheapest rates at the best companies.
Here’s how it works: download the app and create a driver profile (we’ll ask questions about your driving habits, vehicle, and insurance history). Once you request car insurance quotes, you’ll have less than a minute to wait before receiving a batch of real-time quotes from Louisiana’s best insurance companies. You can switch to a new policy right in the app!
Minimum car insurance requirements for liability and full coverage in Louisiana
Louisiana’s car insurance laws require all drivers to buy liability insurance. Full coverage car insurance, which includes collision and comprehensive insurance in addition to state-mandated liability coverage, is technically optional under Louisiana law—but most drivers choose to buy it.
Cheapest minimum liability coverage in Louisiana
In Louisiana, every driver must maintain 15/30/25 liability limits. That means that every insurance policy includes at least the following:
- $15,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per person
- $30,000 of bodily injury liability coverage per accident
- $25,000 of property damage liability coverage per accident
These two types of coverage ensure that your insurance company will pay for other drivers’ medical and vehicle repair expenses if you’re at fault in an accident.
Do you need more than the minimum liability insurance coverage in Louisiana?
Think of Louisiana’s minimum liability coverage as the start—not the end—of your insurance shopping process.
While buying state minimum coverage will keep you in compliance with the law, it won’t do much to protect your wallet in the event of a crash.
Remember, liability insurance covers damages and medical bills that you’re responsible for. The average hospital stay following a car accident costs close to $60,000, while the average car on the road is worth about $48,000.
A single serious accident could saddle you with liability costs well over $100,000—well beyond the liability limits of a minimum coverage policy! And because Louisiana’s car accident laws allow drivers to file personal injury lawsuits for up to a year after an accident, your liability will extend long past the actual incident.
The bottom line: Aim for at least 50/100/50 liability limits on your policy. If you have young drivers on your policy or want to secure the highest level of coverage, go with 100/300/100.
Cheapest full coverage Louisiana auto insurance quotes
Another major drawback of a liability-only insurance policy: it won’t protect your vehicle. Only drivers with full-coverage car insurance can submit insurance claims for physical damage to their own cars.
Full coverage isn’t a technical term, but it usually refers to policies that include collision coverage and comprehensive coverage on top of basic liability.
- Collision insurance pays for damage to your vehicle caused by any kind of crash, from a seven-car pileup to a single-car rollover or a collision with a telephone pole. Collision coverage can even pay if your car’s damaged in an encounter with a gnarly pothole—and since 23.3% of Louisiana’s roads are in poor condition, it’s a worthwhile investment for most drivers.
- Comprehensive insurance pays for damage caused by something other than a collision. This typically includes vandalism, theft, and severe weather—check your policy details to be sure of what your plan covers! Comprehensive coverage can also come into play if your car is stolen—good news for drivers in New Orleans, where auto theft is at the highest rate it’s been in over a decade.
Full coverage insurance isn’t required by law, but it is required by lenders. If you lease or buy a car, you’ll need to carry collision and comprehensive insurance until your lease is up or your loan’s paid off.
While full coverage costs more than basic liability, Jerry can help you balance your coverage needs with your budget!

Average rates for minimum liability coverage and full coverage car insurance in Louisiana
A full coverage car insurance policy costs Louisiana drivers an average of $3,207 per year or $267 per month. For drivers who stick to the state requirements with only minimum liability, car insurance costs $1,849 per year or $154 per month, on average.
But car insurance averages only tell part of the story—and they’re not always a good guide to finding your best insurance rate. Every driver is different, and everything from your age and gender to your credit score, driving record, insurance history, and vehicle type could put your rates above or below the state average.
Louisiana car insurance: Additional coverages
Car insurance doesn’t end with liability, collision, and comprehensive coverage. Many drivers purchase additional coverage, such as:
- Gap insurance, which covers the difference between your outstanding loan balance and your insurance payout if your financed car is totaled.
- MedPay, which helps to offset medical bills and rehabilitation costs for you or your passengers after an accident.
- Non-owner car insurance, which provides you with liability coverage while driving cars you don’t own.
- Personal injury protection (PIP), which pays for medical care, rehabilitation, lost wages, and funeral benefits for you and your passengers after an accident.
- Rental reimbursement coverage, which covers part or all of the cost of a rental car if your primary vehicle is being repaired after a covered claim.
- Towing and labor coverage, also known as roadside assistance, which offers services like towing, battery jumps, and lockout help.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which pays for medical treatments and repairs if you’re hit by an uninsured or underinsured motorist.
While none of these optional coverages are required by law, most drivers choose to add one or more to their policy for added protection—and many add-ons won’t significantly increase your premium.

Car insurance premium by rating factors
Remember—every driver is different, and every insurance company uses a whole slew of rating factors to calculate your car insurance premium.
- Your age and demographics: Teens and other new drivers pay a higher rate for coverage than middle-aged drivers—and so do seniors over age 70. In Louisiana, gender can also affect premiums.
- Your credit score: Research shows that drivers with poor credit file more claims. They also pay approximately 97% more than drivers with excellent credit—for the same coverage.
- Your driving record and claims history: Causing an accident, committing a violation, filing a claim, or letting your insurance lapse can all lead to higher premiums.
- Your driving habits: Louisiana drivers commute about 25 minutes per day—close to the national average. If you drive more or less than that, you’ll see your rates reflect the added (or lessened) risk of an accident.
- Your location: City zip codes carry a higher risk of accidents, theft, vandalism—-and insurance claims. That’s why urban drivers pay more, and rates can vary within a single city.
How to find cheap Louisiana car insurance if you’re a high-risk driver
The occasional speeding ticket might add a surcharge to your insurance policy, but drivers with multiple violations are at risk of earning the “high-risk” label from their insurance company.
Here’s how to navigate car insurance shopping if your Louisiana driving record is less than perfect.
Cheapest car insurance for Louisiana drivers with a speeding ticket
Louisiana speeding tickets come in four categories:
- 1 – 9 mph over the speed limit: $115 – $285 in fines
- 10 – 14 mph over the speed limit: $215 – $385 in fines
- 15 – 20 mph over the speed limit: $240 – $410 in fines
- 21+ mph over the speed limit: Over $240 in fines and possible license suspension
Drive fast enough—or with enough careless lane changes and disruptive actions—and you risk Louisiana’s reckless driving charge, which carries base penalties of up to $200 in fines and up to 90 days in jail.
Any type of speeding ticket can raise your insurance rates, typically by an average of 39%. That higher charge will usually stay on your policy for three to five years—but that doesn’t mean you can’t find savings in the meantime.

How to find cheap Louisiana auto insurance after a DUI
Under Louisiana’s DUI laws, just one instance of driving under the influence could rack up thousands of dollars in fines, legal costs, and increased insurance premiums. The average rate increase after a DUI in Louisiana is 64%, but you can expect even higher increases if you’re convicted multiple times.
Drivers with DUIs tend to pay a lot more for car insurance—but you don’t have to resign yourself to unbearable premiums. Some insurers, like Progressive, give a DUI far less weight when calculating premiums, and Jerry can help you find the best rates based on your record.
Louisiana SR-22 insurance
A DUI is just one way to get an SR-22 filing requirement in Louisiana. This document, which acts as a certificate of financial responsibility proving that an individual carries car insurance, is required for high-risk drivers with a serious history of violations. If your driving privileges were suspended after a violation, filing an SR-22 is a key step in the Louisiana license reinstatement process.
If you no longer have a car, you’ll still need to file an SR-22 to get your license back. In that situation, you’ll need to purchase non-owner SR-22 insurance.
An SR-22 isn’t the end of the world, but not all insurance providers work with them—and those who do may give you a sky-high rate. Jerry can help drivers with SR-22 requirements navigate the market and find providers who are willing to give fair rates to drivers working to improve their records.
How to find cheap car insurance in Louisiana after an at-fault accident
Your rates will also go up after an at-fault accident—but not all companies will raise them by the same amount. GEICO has the highest average rate increase after an accident at a whopping 64%, while State Farm and Travelers policyholders tend to see lower rate spikes.
But don’t worry. As usual, you can keep your rates low by comparing quotes from different providers and switching to a policy that fits your new profile.

How to find cheap Louisiana car insurance based on your insurance history
Insurance companies don’t just look for a clean driving record when reviewing applicants—they also want to see a continuous coverage history with no breaks or gaps.
Whether you forgot to renew your policy, stopped paying your bill, or just spent a few years relying on public transportation, any car insurance lapse will lead to higher rates down the road. If you’re getting insurance for the first time in a long time (or ever), be prepared to pay a little more until you’ve laid down a strong history of on-time payments and continuous coverage.
That’s where Jerry offers an added benefit: in addition to helping you find the best fit for your profile, Jerry gives eligible drivers the option to turn on payment reminders in the app so you never miss a payment. You’ll also receive a renewal reminder and new quotes to compare when it’s almost time to re-up your coverage.
How to find cheap Louisiana car insurance with a low credit score
All major car insurance companies will run a soft credit check and use something called a “credit-based insurance score” when evaluating your application and setting your rates. Drivers with good credit (700 or above) pay less, on average, than drivers with poor credit.
Bad credit doesn’t just suggest a history of unpaid bills; studies actually show that drivers with poor credit tend to file more insurance claims.

How to find cheap auto insurance in Louisiana for your age
Over the course of the average driver’s life, the cost of car insurance starts—and ends—high. Teen drivers between ages 16 and 19 pay the highest rates, but most drivers see their insurance costs go up again in their mid-70s.
The best car insurance companies in Louisiana for young drivers
Like all new drivers, teenagers pay more for car insurance than drivers with a proven record of safe driving. But for teens, the costs are even higher thanks to statistics that show a higher rate of accidents, crash fatalities, and violations among drivers aged 19 and below.
Those increased rates are even higher for male drivers, who show a higher rate of unsafe behaviors like distracted driving and skipping the seatbelt.
The good news: young drivers can save by staying on a family policy, qualifying for good student discounts, and using usage-based insurance tools—and by shopping with Jerry, of course!

The best car insurance companies for senior drivers in Louisiana
Many seniors actually pay less for car insurance than middle-aged drivers. Between ages 55 and 75, you’ll likely see the lowest rates of your whole driving career thanks to decades of experience.
But around your mid-70s, your rates will start to go up because of increased rates of driver error and a much higher risk of accident fatalities. Even good drivers tend to see higher risks on the road when they reach this age.
Enter Jerry, which has helped thousands of seniors find the best car insurance for drivers over 55.
How to find car insurance discounts in Louisiana for your motor vehicle
We’ll keep it simple: the more your vehicle costs to repair, the more it costs to insure.
This means that you’ll pay a higher rate if you drive:
- A brand-new vehicle
- A luxury car
- A sports car
- A hybrid or electric vehicle
- Any vehicle with hard-to-source components
If you drive one of Louisiana’s most popular models, you’ll likely see more moderate insurance rates, thanks to the wide availability of parts and lower cost of repairs.
Matthew Boudreaux, Public Information Director at the Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles, says that the humble Honda Accord is the most popular car in the Pelican State, followed by the Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima. But many Louisiana drivers prefer trucks like the Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, or GMC Sierra 1500.

Is it cheaper to insure a new car or a used car?
In general, new cars cost more to insure than older models. That’s because new cars have a higher value and are more likely to come with brand-new tech that’s costly to repair or replace.
How to find cheap car insurance in Louisiana in your city
Paying for car insurance is no cakewalk in the Big Easy. Major cities like New Orleans, Shreveport, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette have some of the highest average car insurance rates in Louisiana. But in smaller towns and rural areas (think Tickfaw or Fort Polk South), rates tend to be lower.

How to lower the cost of car insurance in Louisiana
We’ve broken down all the biggest factors that go into determining your car insurance rates in Louisiana. Now it’s time to put the reins back in your hands and work on lowering that cost.
Here’s how you can hack your car insurance rates in Louisiana:
- Comparison shopping: It might not be glamorous, but comparing quotes is the #1 way to save money on car insurance—and Jerry makes it simple.
- Bundling insurance products: If you own a home, a home and auto insurance bundle could save you an average of 15% or more on both policies.
- Looking for car insurance discounts: Bundling isn’t the only way to save. Check with your insurer for discounts based on payment habits, memberships, and more. Military members in Louisiana are entitled to a 25% discount from any car insurance company!
- Increasing your deductible: In a pinch, raising your full coverage deductible could shave a small amount off of your usual costs.
- Changing your payment methods: If you can pay your annual premium in full, most auto insurance companies will give you a discount.
- Taking a defensive driving course: Check with your insurance company to see if you’re eligible for a discount if you enroll in and complete an approved defensive driving course.
Why is car insurance so expensive in Louisiana?
Auto insurance rates are on the rise everywhere—but Louisiana is one of the most expensive states in the country for car insurance. Here’s why:
- Higher motor vehicle fatality rates: In 2021, the Department of Transportation reported 887 fatal crashes in Louisiana resulting in 972 deaths. That’s 21 deaths per 100,000 residents—over twice the national average.
- More drivers per capita: Louisiana has a higher-than-average number of licensed drivers, leading to a higher risk of accidents.
- More expensive medical care: According to a 2022 report from Forbes Advisor, Louisiana has the second-highest healthcare costs of any state. Steep medical bills lead to higher liability insurance costs.
- Uninsured drivers: As of 2019, 11.7% of Louisiana drivers didn’t carry car insurance, raising the cost of coverage for everyone else.
