What are the rules for license plate frames in Kentucky?

186.170
allows for license plate frames; however, “no rim, frame, or other covering around the plate shall in any way obscure or cover any lettering or decal on the plate.”
There are special rules around trademarks that may appear on your license plate. If a driver does not agree with a private corporation trademark on their license plate, they can pay $3 for an official decal to cover the mark. Covering the trademark with a license plate cover is not allowed.

What about license plate covers?

License plate covers are allowed in Kentucky—the same rules as for a license plate frame apply. The cover cannot obscure or obstruct the license registration number or any of the decals that appear on the plate.

What are the fines for license plate covers in Kentucky?

If you are pulled over for having a covered or obscured license plate in Kentucky, you may be charged with a traffic infraction. The officer can decide how severe the infraction is and will apply a fine if necessary. You always have the option of taking a ticket to court, but you may wish to consult with a lawyer first.
