Can you remove the second row seats from a Jeep Commander?

Yes—the Jeep Commander has removable seats. However, it’s a bit of a process (more on that soon).
Before moving forward with taking out the second row of seats, here are some safety tips you should follow:
  • Check your airbags. The lack of second row seats and a passenger in the backseat could result in your car’s side airbags not working as intended. Ensure that every person in the backseat wears a seat belt, and review the
    Jeep Commander owner’s manual
to confirm whether the airbags will work or not. Read through any other safety recommendations in the manual, as well.
  • Cover the floor with a mat. Removing seats from any car could uncover metal brackets on the floor. If you hate looking at them, lay down a tarp, rug, or another floor cover. Doing so can also prevent injuries.
  • Don’t lose the bolts. After removing the bolts and other items, store themsomewhere safe so that they don’t get lost.
Note that it’s probably not worth your time toremove the seats only to store an extra piece of luggage (or other small items). In this case, you can just fold down your rear seats

How to remove the second row seats from a Jeep Commander

Follow these steps to safely remove the second row seats from your Jeep Commander:
  • Remove the hold-down tabs (pull up and to the side) on the jack storage compartment.
  • Take out the jack
  • Pull up the trim piece. This clips to the floor and your hatch lock mechanism is in the center of it.
  • Using a 10-mm socket, remove the four hold-down bolts.
  • Next, remove the trim piece
  • You will see one bolt (center) and three nuts (one in the center, one to the left, and one to the right). Remove these with an 18-mm socket
  • The seats can now be removed.
You might want to ask for some help to lift the 100-pound seat out of your vehicle. Once the seat is out, replace the jack compartment and the trim piece.

How to fold down the seats in a Jeep Commander

Sometimes, you only need to fold down the seats to get the amount of space you need for extra cargo. For most Jeep Commanders, there are two ways you can fold down the seats.
You can often lower the center, left, or right side of the second row seat. And the end seats can sometimes be tumbled forward, providing more access to the third row seats. To do this, pull up the seatback lever on the outboard side of the seat.
Keep in mind that pulling this handle up will recline the seat. All you have to do now is fold the seat down and tumble it forward.
If your Jeep has a release strap, simply pull it and then lower the center seatback.
Please remember that you should never drive your car when the outer second row seats are positioned in a tumbled manner. They should only be tumbled to get in and out of the third row seat.
