Jeep Rubicon’s ground clearance over the years

The Jeep Wrangler’s Rubicon trim debuted in 2003 as part of the brand’s 3rd generation. It was designed specifically with off-roading in mind and featured 17-inch tires as a standard feature.
The Rubicon has undergone some design changes over the years, including adjustments to its ground clearance. Here’s how it has fluctuated over the years:
  • 3rd generation TJ (2003-2006): 8.2 inches
  • 4th generation JK (2006-2018): 10.1-10.2 inches
  • 5th generation JL (2018-present): 10.2-10.8 inches
If you're shopping around for a Rubicon, keep in mind that the Rubicon and Rubicon 392 are technically two different trim levels. And while the Rubicon 392 is Jeep Wrangler’s top-tier trim, the 2022 model year has a lower ground clearance of 10.3 inches versus the Rubicon’s 10.8 inches.

What is ground clearance—and why does it matter?

Ground clearance measures the distance between the lowest point of your vehicle’s chassis and the ground. If you’re interested in buying an SUV that you can take off-roading, ground clearance is important to consider.
The more ground clearance a vehicle has, the better it will be able to traverse uneven terrain found on off-road trails. SUVs that are intended to be taken off the beaten path will have a minimum ground clearance of 8.5 inches
If you go off-roading in a vehicle with too low a ground clearance you may wind up getting trapped in the mud or ruining your undercarriage in the rough conditions.

Is the Jeep Rubicon a good off-road vehicle?

Absolutely. This Jeep was designed specifically for it. The 2022 Rubicon’s impressive 10.8-inch ground clearance is well above the minimum height recommendations. If you’re driving a first-generation Rubicon, be mindful of where you’re headed. Its significantly lower 8.2-inch ground clearance is slightly less than ideal.
When you aren’t in the thick of an off-road adventure, you’ll still reap the benefits of the Rubicon’s ground clearance. Having that extra lift is great if you live in an area where you have to drive in the snow. Another perk is the substantial towing capacity of 2,000 pounds for the 2-door model and 3,5000 pounds if you drive the
