How far is Mexico from New York if you're driving?

I want to go on an epic road trip, and I’m seriously considering driving from New York City to Mexico. The only thing I’m worried about is the distance. How long will it take to drive to Mexico from New York City?

Driving to Mexico from New York will take around 29 hours—and certainly make for an epic road trip! The distance between New York City and Nuevo Laredo, the closest Mexican border town, is right around 2,000 miles.
Because of the vast distance between your residence and your destination, you should take 5–7 days to reach the Mexican border. Not only will this provide a less hectic drive, but you can also stop to see tons of awesome things along the way.
Consider adding a few of these adventures to your itinerary:
  • Check out the Pennsylvania State Capitol Building in Harrisburg.
  • Go for a hike in the Appalachian Mountains.
  • Go to the top of the Sunsphere in Knoxville, Tennessee.
  • Stop for a bite at the world-famous Champy’s Fried Chicken in Chattanooga, home to 40-ounce beers and out-of-this-world fried chicken. Just make sure to stay overnight.
  • Explore the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Alabama.
  • Take a short detour to saunter down Bourbon Street in New Orleans.
  • Indulge your inner Neil Armstrong at the Houston Space Center.
  • Visit the Alamo in San Antonio.
Before you cross the border into Mexico, you’ll need to get
Mexican car insurance
, as it’s required for foreign nationals.
