How to remote start your Mazda CX-5
You may be able to use the key fob or the mobile app to start your Mazda CX-5 remotely. Which you need to use depends on how old your Mazda is.
Pre-2021: Use your key fob for remote start
If you have a Mazda CX-5 from before 2021 that’s equipped with the Mazda remote start system, you should also have a secondary key fob that you can use to start it remotely.
- The fob should make a sound that confirms your car has started.
Post-2021: Use Mazda Connected Services for a remote start
The Mazda Connected Services app became compatible with the CX-5 starting in 2021. All you need to do is download the app on your smartphone and connect it to your Mazda vehicle.
To start your car remotely using the installed Mazda app:
- Open the app.
- Press and hold the “start” button until the indicator completes a full circle.
- Listen for the app to confirm that your car is turned on.
Note that the Mazda Connected Services app requires a paid subscription. Anyone buying a new Mazda CX-5 will receive a free trial that they can use before having to pay for the MyMazda app and included remote start feature.

Which Mazda models come with remote start?
Mazda Connected Services got its start in 2019 and, by 2021, all of its new models are now compatible with the remote control start app. Assuming you’re registered and subscribed, you’ll be able to start all of the following models remotely:
We assume the soon-to-be-released Mazda CX-90 will have remote engine start, too. Remote start for Mazda was still prevalent before 2021, although you need the secondary fob to use it.
If your Mazda doesn’t have an OEM remote starter or you are not sure if it does, you could look into installing a remote start kit. You can find a plug & play remote start kit online.
Check with a Mazda USA dealership for advice about installing aftermarket remote start kits. It’s important to consider that any modifications might void your warranty while your car is still new.
