How to change your address on an Mississippi driver’s license

With all the various tasks involved with moving, the good news is that this one is fairly straightforward. In Mississippi, the Department of Public Safety (DPS) handles driver’s licenses and vehicle registrations. Here’s what you need to know about changing your address with them:

If you’re moving within Mississippi

Whether it’s across the street in Jackson or across the state to Biloxi, you’ll have 30 days after you move to notify the Mississippi DPS of your new address. You have two options:
You’ll need your current driver’s license for both of these, and if you go the online route, be prepared to supply the last four digits of your Social Security number. The fee for a four year renewal is $24, and the fee for a duplicate license is $11

If you’re moving to Mississippi from another state

If you’re new to the state, you can only change your address one wayin person at a Driver Services Bureau. You’ll need to gather the appropriate documents to show proof of your ID, legal presence, Social Security number, and residency. You’ll need to have:
  • A valid out-of-state license
  • Your original Social Security card
  • A state issued long form birth certificate
  • Two proofs of residency (utility bills, lease agreement, bank statements, etc)
Once you’ve corralled all your paperwork, head to your nearest
Driver Service Bureau
. The
fee
for a four year license is $24, and an eight year one is $47. You won’t need to take a written or road test, but there may be an eye exam.
Technically, you have 60 days to get your Mississippi license when you move to the state, but if you have a vehicle to register you need to get that done in 30 days. Since you need a Mississippi license to register your car, best just to get the deed done within 30 days of moving.

Other steps for an Mississippi change of address

The other important organization to notify of your new address is the United States Postal Service (USPS). You can complete the
change of address process
online, and it only takes a few minutes. Make this task a priority as it will ensure that you don’t miss any important mail, and you can also update your voter registration and score a bunch of great coupons

How to notify your insurance company of your Mississippi change of address

Last but not least, make sure you notify your insurer of your new address right away
This is generally very easy to accomplish, and can often be done online or via the company’s app. If not, a quick call to your agent is all that it will take. If you have any doubts, contact your agent right away.

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

There are a few reasons why it’s critically important to notify your insurer when you move. All states have different laws as to minimum car insurance requirements, and what was fine in your old state might not be enough
car insurance coverage in Mississippi
. The last thing you want is to get pulled over (bad enough) and realize that your insurance coverage is insufficient (even worse).
Even if you’re just moving in state, it’s equally as important to not delay in informing your insurer of your address change. Your zip code is one of the main factors that go into determining how much you’ll pay for car insurance, and you might notice a change in your premiums after you move. Not letting your insurance company know that you’ve moved could potentially be construed as fraud and lead to a host of bad consequences.
Long story short? Not updating your address with your insurance company is an easy way to guarantee sky-high rates on car, home, and renters insurance for years to come.
