background
Dodge has had some notable logos since its inception in 1900. There was the six-pointed star, the leaping ram, and the crest, to name a few. Each represented a different period in the company’s history and many would become iconic for both the industry and the masses.
What’s in a car logo? Well, a lot. Many car logos are iconic—a stamp of quality that the buying public recognizes and appreciates. The most influential automakers understood the importance of having not only the right logo but also making sure it evolved with the times. The history of the Dodge logo is a reflection of the company’s history.
We've created this guide to introduce you to the illustrious history of the Dodge logo. We’ll review its design, the individual elements, and also how to protect your Dodge with

Dodge was founded by brothers John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge in 1900. They would release their first car in 1914.
The first logo was a six-pointed star that unintentionally looked like the Star of David, an important symbol in Judaism. It had two interlocking triangles, one representing the body and the other representing the soul. Some believe that it was meant to reflect the unification of the two brothers. This was used from 1914 to 1938.
From here, the Dodge brothers cycled through a lot of logo designs and designers, including Virgil Exner and Lippincott & Marguiles. The company eventually settled on using the ram. The story goes that when a designer in the 1920s was asked what a person would think (or scream) if they ran into a ram in the wild, the designer replied, “Dodge!”.
Dodge also uses a logo solely made up of its name in silver with two red marks through the “E”. Around 2009, Dodge relegated the ram’s head logo mostly to their pickup trucks. To most, though, it is still the Dodge logo.

Dodge logo changes through time

The Dodge logo has gone through many redesigns over the last century. The current logo has almost no resemblance to the original six-pointed star.
Here are the most notable changes through the years:

  • 1940 to 1950: After the six-pointed star, Dodge introduced the ram, which would become a key part of their branding to this day. The logo first took the form of a leaping ram and was used as its hood ornament. It was retired in 1954, only to be brought back in the 1980s.
  • 1955 to 1962: Dodge adopted Virgil Exner’s “Forward Look”, which was two overlapping boomerang shapes. One shape represented progress and the other forward motion.
  • 1962 to 1976: Dodge next introduced a bit of a curio with the Fratzog, a geometrical logo made of three curved triangles. The name had no meaning (it was randomly thought up by a designer).
  • 1982 to 1992: For about a decade, Dodge used the Pentastar. This was adopted from the Chrysler logo. One difference was that Dodge’s Pentastar was red whereas Chrysler’s was blue. This was originally designed by Lippincott & Marguiles.

What’s behind the Dodge logo design?

As you’ve learned, Dodge has two logos: one made up of the company name and one with the ram’s head. The key elements that make up parts of the current logos include:

  • The emblem: the ram’s head is synonymous with Dodge and has been their logo for some time. The ram is the ancient symbol of Aries and stands for authority, force, and fearlessness. The text logo is simply the company name in silver or chrome with two clean tire marks through the last letter.
  • The font for the company name logo: Dodge uses a font called Viper Squadron Solid font.
  • The color: The approved colors for the Dodge logo are black, red, and gray.
