Dodge Journey 3rd Row Seating Review

The Dodge Journey is one of the most affordable three-row SUVs available for purchase in the United States.

background
2020 was the last model year for the
Dodge Journey
, long one of the most affordable three-row SUVs in the North American market. While the Journey is cramped and disappointing to drive, it may still be an attractive option for families on a budget.
Dodge ceased production of the Journey for good reason. The Journey’s handling is far from impressive, and it lacks the driver-assist technology consumers expect from modern vehicles. Its styling also leaves much to be desired.
That said, the Dodge Journey does have a third row, and can seat up to seven people. While space inside the Journey can get a bit tight, its still a solid option for cost-conscious families.

What is the Dodge Journey’s 3rd row like?

The 2020 Dodge Journey came in two trim levels—the base SE and the higher-tier Crossroad. Both trims came with a foldable third row and are capable of seating up to seven people.

Space and comfort

What good is a third row if it’s too cramped to sit in?
Comfort is a difficult thing to quantify. However, specs like legroom, headroom, and passenger volume are solid indicators of how comfortable an SUV’s interior is. Check out the numbers on the 2020 Dodge Journey:
  • Third row: 23.4 inches of legroom, 37.7 inches of headroom
  • Second row: 36.1 inches of legroom, 39.9 inches of headroom
  • First row: 40.8 inches of legroom, 40.8 inches of headroom
  • Total passenger volume: 124 cubic feet
Wow is that third row tight! Though passengers in the Journey’s first and second rows have plenty of rooms to stretch their limbs, only small children can fit comfortably in the third. If you have a young family, or don’t plan on transporting passengers in your third row often, the Journey may be the SUV for you. If you need more room, you’re better off going with a competing SUV.

Is the Dodge Journey good for big families and long trips?

The Dodge Journey’s main selling points are that it is affordable and has enough seating for seven people. That’s just about it.
While passengers in your first two rows should be comfortable enough, adult-sized passengers in your third row will have a miserable trip. The Journey’s underpowered engine and sluggish transmission further dampen its driving experience.
The 2020 Journey holds an overall National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety rating of four stars, which is solid. However, the Journey performed poorly in crash test results. Other SUVs will do a far better job of keeping you and your family safe.
When it comes to gas, the 2020 Journey is a certified guzzler, rated to 19 mpg in city driving and 25 mpg on the highway. That cuts into the money saved by purchasing the Journey over a more fuel-efficient SUV.
There’s an old expression that says “when you buy cheap, you get what you pay for.” That pretty well sums up the Journey. If you’re looking for a comfortable and safe family car for long road trips, look elsewhere.

This app is great, but the customer service is even better! Not to mention convenient! My husband and I got the lowest rate (much lower than the rates I was finding online through my own searches), quickly, and pretty much all through text message! Thank you so much for a hassle free experience👍
