Yes, license plate frames are entirely legal in Delaware. The catch is that they cannot cover any letters or numbers on the plate or your registration stickers.
What are the rules for license plate frames in Delaware?
Delaware Code Title 21 Chapter 21 Subchapter 2 § 2126
states that license plates must be “securely fastened to the vehicle to which it is assigned,” and shall not be“covered with any tinted material, nor shall any other material be placed on or around a number plate which would conceal and/or obscure any information contained thereon, including the registration expiration sticker.” So this means that no text on the plate, including the state name, motto, or license plate number, can be obstructed in any way by a license plate frame or cover. Any license plate frame that satisfies these requirements is legal.
What about license plate covers?
License plate covers are legal in Delaware as long as they’re clear. Delaware’s law stipulates that no tinted material can be used over a license plate.
What are the fines for license plate frames in Delaware?
The fine for having an obscured license plate is between $100 to $200 for the first violation.
