What are the rules for license plate frames in New Jersey?
New Jersey law states that drivers may not use license plate frames that “conceal or otherwise obscure any part of any marking imprinted upon the vehicle’s registration plate.”
This means if your plate frame covers up any part of the plate, even the “New Jersey” and “Garden State” stamped at the top and bottom of the plate, it’s illegal. As long as all text and numbers on all parts of the plate are visible, your plate’s frame is legal.

License plate frames are perfectly legal in New Jersey, but license plate covers—whether glass or plastic—are illegal. Anything that in any way blurs, covers, or obscures the license plate is prohibited.
