How to change your address on an Alaska driver’s license

Fortunately for weary movers, you can complete your Alaska change of address from the comfort of your couch! The state’s DMV allows you to change your address online, by mail, or at one of several branches.

If you’re moving within Alaska

No matter if you’re moving from
Fairbanks
to
Soldotna
or just moving a couple of miles away in Nome, you must notify the Alaska DMV of your change of address. Thankfully, it’s a pretty straightforward process.
You have three options:
  • Change your address
    online

  • Mail a letter to the DMV—make sure you include license plate number(s), the last two digits of the VINs of every vehicle you own, your driver’s license number, your printed legal name, and your signature
  • Change your address in person at any of the
    DMV’s many offices
To meet
REAL ID requirements
, you will need to provide one of each of the following categories of documentation:
  • Identity and lawful status: Approved documents include your passport, birth certificate, certificate of naturalization, certificate of U.S. citizenship, or foreign passport with a U.S. visa and approved I-94 form
  • Social Security number: You must provide your complete Social Security number written on the application or a verification letter confirming your ineligibility for Social Security
  • Residential address: A document stating your full name and current address such as a bank statement, deed, mortgage document, rental agreement, employment documents, or insurance documents

If you’re moving to Alaska from another state

If you will be driving in Alaska for more than 90 days, you must obtain an Alaska driver’s license. You must also update your vehicle’s registration within 30 days of moving to Alaska. The process for updating your address is the same as it is for Alaskan residents moving within the state, as outlined above.

Other steps for an Alaska change of address

Don’t forget to update your mailing address with the United States Postal Service (USPS), too. Fill out the USPS
change of address form
to ensure you continue getting your mail and packages. At the same time, you may update your voter registration and could earn up to $750 in coupons.

How to notify your insurance company of your Alaska change of address

In order to prevent any lapses in coverage, you must provide your insurance provider with your updated address.
In nearly every case, you can update your address by calling your insurance representative. Some companies may also allow you to update your address through an app or via an online portal. When in doubt, just call your agent and ask!

Why notifying your insurance company of a change of address is so important

Insurance requirements vary between states. For example, Alaska requires that all drivers have
liability insurance
that meets certain thresholds.
If you fail to notify your insurance provider of your change of address and your coverage lapses, you may find yourself in serious trouble. Penalties for failing to meet
Alaska’s minimum insurance requirements
include having your driver’s license suspended for up to 90 days and fines of up to $500.
In addition, your ZIP code plays an important role in determining your insurance rate. Insurance providers check to see if you live in an area where accidents or vehicle damage are more likely. If you do, they charge you more. So, failing to notify your insurance provider of a change of address may be considered fraud!
Notify your insurance provider of your new address as soon as you move, and it could save you many headaches and a lot of cash!
