Which Kias have the best gas mileage?

The top Kia models for gas mileage are a trio of SUVs, two of them plug-in hybrids and one a simple hybrid. The new Kia Niro plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV tops the entire brand line, with the bigger KiaSorento PHEV SUV coming in second and the Kia Niro hybrid SUV coming in the third spot:
  • 2023 Kia Niro PHEV: up to 105 MPGe combined (46 mpg combined)
  • 2023 Kia Sorento PHEV: up to 79 MPGe combined (34 mpg combined)
  • 2023 Kia Niro hybrid: up to 53 mpg combined
We’ll break this down a little more in case you’re looking for as efficient a Kia as possible, one of its many economical SUVs, a non-hybrid model, or a Kia electric vehicle. We’ll also lay out some competitors so you get a better lay of the land in terms of fuel-efficient vehicles.

The most fuel-efficient Kia non-hybrid cars

As it happens, Kia’s most fuel-efficient vehicles are SUVs. That said, it also has several fuel-efficient cars on offer, so we’ll go through those first.
Kia’s most fuel-efficient car is the 2023
Kia Rio
. The Rio comes as either a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback, comes loaded with plenty of standard technology features, and features a surprisingly pliant suspension. With just an inline-four cylinder engine with 120 horsepower making this lil’ fella go, the Rio gets a solid 36 mpg combined for both city and highway driving.
The Rio starts at just $17,645, making it a relative steal considering what you get with it. It’s one of the few—and certainly one of the best—subcompact vehicles you can get your hands on.
Kia’s gas mileage runner-up is the 2023
Kia Forte
compact sedan, a sleek four-door sedan with sharp styling and a very accessible price—its MSRP starts at just $19,490.The Forte also gets 35 mpg combined for both city and highway driving. It sports a svelte 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower, along with Kia’s suite of driver-assist technology.
The fuel efficiency bronze medallist of Kia cars is the 2023
Kia K5
midsize sedan, the perfect nuclear family hauler. Powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine boasting 180 horsepower, the K5 gets a very respectable 31 mpg combined for city and highway driving. Considering its amped-up power (compared to the Rio and Forte, at least), the K5 starts at a very business-like $25,090.
Not thrilled with Kia’s passenger car lineup and want to check out the competition? Well, it makes sense to look at your options. A good alternative to the fuel-sipping Rio is the equally fuel-efficient
Hyundai Accent
, which gets 36 mpg combined, has a bit more of a lively driving manner, and is priced similarly.
Hemming and hawing over the Kia Forte? If Kia’s compact sedan doesn’t float your boat, look at the
Hyundai Elantra
, an elegant mid-size sedan with sharp style, a spacious cabin, and the same fuel efficiency rating—35 mpg gallon combined.
And if none of these Kias are quite right for you, might we suggest the more rugged-looking and similarly-priced
Subaru Legacy Sport
sedan? It comes with standard all-wheel drive and a boatload of standard driver-assist technology, and it gets 31 mpg combined.

Most fuel-efficient Kia SUVs

Kia’s most fuel-efficient SUVs are also Kia’s most fuel-efficient vehicles by a wide margin, owing to the fact that Kia’s most fuel-efficient SUVs are either plug-in hybrids or hybrids. The king of Kia fuel efficiency? Let us introduce you to the Kia Niro plug-in hybrid {PHEV).
Sporting effortlessly cool exterior styling, not to mention an interior lined with sustainable materials, the 2023 Kia Niro is a hit where it most counts—with a stunning 105 MPGe combined, drawn from a combined gas engine and electric motor that boasts 180 horsepower. With a starting price of $27,785, the Niro PHEV is an accessible ride for drivers eager to get a foot in the door of the electric revolution.
Runner-up for the most fuel-efficient Kia SUV is the Kia Sorento PHEV, a spacious family SUV that boasts a smooth and composed ride thanks to its plug-in hybrid configuration that sports 261 horsepower combined between the gas engine and electric motor. It offers a very impressive 79 MPGe combined, along with 32 miles of electric range. The Sorento, with its bigger size and resemblance to Kia’s popular Telluride SUV, starts at a pricier $37,885.
In third place for most fuel-efficient Kia is the Kia PHEV’s sibling—the Kia Niro hybrid. Offering the same futuristic styling as the Niro PHEV, the hybrid offers 53 mpg combined. Sure, that doesn’t compare to the PHEV Niro. But in the grand scheme of things, that’s pretty good gas mileage for a hybrid. Along with its snazzy style, compliant suspension, and spacious interior, the Niro hybrid is a bargain of a find, with a starting price of just $27,785.
After the aforementioned PHEV or HEV vehicles, the next most fuel-efficient Kia SUVs are as follows:
  • 2023 Kia Sportage hybrid 43/42/44 mpg (combined/city/highway)
  • 2023 Kia Sorento hybrid 37/39/35 mpg combined
  • 2023
    Kia Sorento
    gas 37/39/35 mpg combined
  • 2023 Kia Telluride gas 23/20/26 mpg combined
Ah yes, the
Kia Telluride
, the celebrated, large family-hauler that’s become a bit of a star in the SUV world. And why shouldn’t it? This V-6-powered Telluride boasts a smooth-as-silk drive, many technological features, and a luxurious interior. However, that all-important fuel efficiency speaks volumes—just 23 mpg worth.
Now, if you think a Kia SUV isn’t quite for you, there are other options that boast top-notch fuel economy figures. Most prominent of those competitors is Toyota’s fleet of SUVs, which includes the very efficient
Toyota Rav4 Prime
. This plug-in hybrid boasts an excellent 94 MPGe combined and 38 mpg in gas-only driving. It starts at $40,300, but its popularity seems to merit the significantly higher price tag (at least for a Toyota).
The
Toyota Venza
is another sharp-looking hybrid with standard all-wheel drive, and it has solid fuel-sipping credentials, but you’ll pay more for it than you would a Niro—it starts at $34,575
You could also check out the
Toyota Highlander hybrid
, which starts at $39,555, if you want a bigger SUV with good gas mileage. An all-wheel-drive hybrid Highlander is also available, but it features slightly lower fuel efficiency across the board.
  • 2022 Toyota Rav4 Prime: 94 MPGe combined (38 mpg combined)
  • 2022 Toyota Venza AWD: 40/37/30 mpg (city/hwy/combined)
  • 2022 Toyota Highlander Hybrid: 36/35/36 mpg

Most fuel-efficient Kia electric vehicles

Not only would we here at Jerry be remiss if we didn’t mention Kia’s fully electric vehicles (EV), we’d be ignorant of the future, which we are all hurtling into. Kia’s EVs surpass even the Korean carmaker’s plug-in hybrid vehicles in overall fuel efficiency (even if the EVs don’t actually use “fuel”).
Kia features two fully electric vehicles—the Kia EV6 electric vehicle and the Niro electric vehicle. The EV6 is the crown jewel of Kia’s fleet, with its sleek exterior design, lively driving demeanor, stylish interior, and a fantastic 117 MPGe combined for both city and highway driving. Depending on trim level, the EV6 will have a driving range between 230 and 310 miles. The 2023 EV6 is expected to come with a starting price of around $43,000, so it's certainly pricier than most Kia vehicles.
And then we have the Kia Niro EV, which offers a more affordable starting price of $33,000 but is less exciting than the EV6. It's more like the other Niros (surprise), except this one is fully electric, with an excellent 112 MPGe combined. It features just over 250 miles of driving range, along with a stylish interior design and a snazzy exterior look. However, the driving experience isn't anywhere near as fun as the EV6.
