The 2022 Hyundai Ioniq hybrid has the best gas mileage of any Hyundai vehicle with up to 59 MPG on the highway. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) named the Hyundai Ioniq the most fuel-efficient hybrid model on the market today. The Ioniq hybrid is also available as a plug-in hybrid.
For Hyundai drivers interested in thwarting expensive gas prices, your best bet is to get behind the wheel of one of the South Korean car brand’s several hybrid models. If driving a hybrid isn’t for you, Hyundai is also topping fuel-efficiency lists with its non-hybrid Elantra and Accent models. Aside from their brag-worthy gas mileage stats, Hyundais are also a great option due to their general affordability and generous factory warranties.

Which Hyundais have the best gas mileage?

Over the years, Hyundai has done a good job of keeping its lineup at the forefront of auto trends with a wide selection of conventional hybrids (HEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). The gas mileage of plug-in hybrids is measured as MPGe, due to their capability of running on a combination of gasoline and pure electric power
With that in mind, here are the top Hyundais with the best gas mileage:
  • 2022
    Hyundai Ioniq
    Plug-in Hybrid: 119 MPGe/52 MPG combined
  • 2022
    Hyundai Tucson
    Plug-in Hybrid: 80 MPGe/35 MPG combined
  • 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid: 76 MPGe/33 MPG combined
  • 2022 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid: Up to 59 MPG combined
Be advised that Hyundai is shaking things up come 2023. For the 2023 model year, Hyundai will no longer be offering the Accent sedan, Ioniq hybrid variations, Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid, or Tucson Plug-in Hybrid. The only Hyundai hybrids scheduled for release for the 2023 model year are the
Elantra Hybrid
and
Sonata Hybrid

The most fuel-efficient Hyundai cars

It’s impossible to talk about Hyundai’s most fuel-efficient cars without bringing up its hybrid options, but as we mentioned before, that’s only the beginning as far as good gas mileage is concerned.
The Ioniq has been critical in Hyundai’s ability to stay relevant in the new era of automotive advancement. Hyundai has been manufacturing some derivative of the Ioniq since 2017, with HEV, PHEV, and EV versions all hitting the market in the past. The future of the Ioniq lies solely in electric vehicles, but the 2022 Ioniq hybrids have undeniably great gas mileage.
The Ioniq’s convenient hatchback body style and standard-setting fuel efficiency are standouts. The best fuel economy actually comes from its base-level Blue trim at up to 59 combined MPG—that’s a better stat than any other HEV on the market today.
As you move up the trim levels, the fuel efficiency of the Ioniq dwindles—albeit slightly—to a maximum of 55 combined MPG. The source of the Ioniq’s downright impressive gas mileage is its 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine. The 139 horsepower this engine produces might not be enough power for some, but in the world of hybrid vehicles, fuel efficiency and high-powered engines simply aren’t two characteristics that go together.
You’ll get the same engine specs if you opt for the Ioniq Plug-in Hybrid, but you’ll also get to enjoy 29 miles of pure electric range, before even needing to engage the combustion engine. If you’re running on engine power, the gas mileage doesn’t disappoint at 52 combined MPG
If you’re more focused on fuel-efficient Hyundai models that aren’t getting discontinued for the forthcoming model year, you may want to set your sights on the hybrid versions of the Elantra or Sonata
The Sonata Hybrid is the larger of the two, with a starting MSRP of $28,445, and has a 52 combined MPG. The Elantra Hybrid is a compact sedan whose smaller stature not only makes it more affordable with a starting MSRP of $25,495, but it also ekes out a couple more miles per gallon at 54 combined MPG

Most fuel-efficient Hyundai SUVs

The most fuel-efficient plug-in hybrids have proven to be a great segue between vehicles powered by a combustion engine and fully-electric vehicles, and Hyundai’s offerings in this segment are no exception.
To start, the 2022 Hyundai Tucson Plug-in Hybrid has a fuel economy of 80 MPGe and an estimated 33 miles of pure electric range. The starting MSRP is significantly higher than that of Hyundai’s HEV or PHEV sedans at $36,695.
The mileage figures for the larger 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid don’t disappoint either. The Sante Fe Plug-in Hybrid gets 76 MPGe and up to 30 miles of pure electric range. The starting price for the 2022 Sante Fe Plug-in Hybrid is $41,295
Both of Hyundai’s plug-in hybrid SUVs have a four-cylinder engine that produces 261 horsepower—providing a little more oomph than the engine in the hybrid sedan models.

Most fuel-efficient non-hybrid Hyundais

So what happens if we take all the hybrid powertrains off the table? The truth is, Hyundai is definitely making gains with its environmentally-friendly cars, but its non-hybrid gas-powered vehicles are absolutely worth a look as well.
Just about every non-hybrid Hyundai gets good gas mileage. Take the non-hybrid Hyundai Elantra—the base SE model boasts 37 combined MPG, an enticing spec for any driver. It’s also important to note that the non-hybrid version of this celebrated Hyundai sedan comes at a cheaper price than its hybrid counterpart, with prices starting at around $21,595.
SUV diehards don’t have to make much of a sacrifice either in terms of gas mileage. The
Hyundai Kona
, a nimble subcompact SUV introduced in 2018, gets 32 combined MPG. Keeping in line with Hyundai’s affordability trend, the Kona’s starting prices are more than manageable at $23,285 MSRP.
