Why you should know your Ram’s lug pattern

A lug pattern is somtimes referred to as a bolt pattern and tells you the number of lug holes and how far apart they are on your Ram’s wheels. Lug patterns appear as a numerical code made from two different numbers: the first is the number of lug holes and the second is the diameter of the circle formation your lug holes create.
For example, a 5x4.5 lug pattern lets you know that there are 5 lug holes and they create a circle formation that’s 4.5 inches wide.
Understanding your Ram’s lug pattern makes it a lot easier to shop for new wheels or rims because you need this number to find wheels that are compatible with your lug pattern.

Lug pattern terminology 101

If you’re new to the world of Ram wheel specs, including lug patterns, the table above might have felt difficult to parse out. Understanding these specs becomes pretty simple once you understand what these key terms actually mean:
OEM wheel size: OEM is short for
Original Equipment Manufacturer
and indicates the diameter of your Ram’s original wheels. Any new rims should match your Ram’s OEM wheel size to fit properly.
Lug pattern: Lug patterns are occasionally called bolt patterns. This numerical code tells you how many lug holes are in your wheel followed by the diameter of the imaginary circle they create. This pattern can help you select wheels that are compatible with your Ram.
Offset: The offset describes the distance of the mounting surface to the center of the wheel’s rim. Positive offsets indicate that the wheel is pulled into the car, while negative offsets mean the wheel sticks out from the car.
Stud size: Stud sizes can be written in metric or imperial measures, so be aware of this when reading off stud sizes! US fasteners use imperial measures and are written as stud diameter x threads per inch (e.g., 1/2x20), while metric fasteners are written as stud diameter x distance between threads (e.g., 14mmx1.50).
Center bore: A wheel’s center bore is the opening that centers the wheel on the hub. That hole can vary in size, so knowing the right measurement is important.

How to measure your Ram’s lug pattern

Don’t see your Ram listed on our table above? Don’t worry—measuring your lug pattern at home is easy! All you need is a ruler or measuring tape to do it.
First, count the lug holes in your wheel. The total number for one wheel is the first number of your lug pattern.
Then, you’ll measure the diameter of your lug pattern. Do this by placing your ruler on the outer edge of any of the lug holes. Then, place the end of your measuring tape or ruler at the center of the lug hole on the opposite side of the wheel.
The distance from your first lug hole to the opposite lug hole is the second number of your lug pattern: your diameter!
Now, you know your Ram’s specific lug pattern so you can make informed decisions about purchasing new wheels and rims for your car.
