  • The Kia Optima requires 5.07 quarts of 5W-20 motor oil at every oil and filter change.
  • You should change the oil in your Optima every 3,000 to 5,000 miles
  • If you opt for full synthetic oil, you may be able to wait up to 10,000 miles between oil changes
  • To perform your Kia Optima oil change at home, you’ll need a socket wrench, a filter wrench, a drain pan, and a replacement filter in addition to your 5W-20 motor oil of choice.

Kia Optima engine oil capacity

The Kia Optima has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an oil capacity of 5.07 quarts (or 4.8 liters).
Keep in mind: Be careful not to confuse the oil capacity with your Kia Optima’s 2.4-L
engine displacement
. The engine displacement refers to the volume that the engine’s cylinders take up and is not interchangeable with the capacity of your oil reserve.

The best engine oil type for a Kia Optima

Kia recommends Total Quartz SAE 5W-20 engine oil for the Optima. These characters tell us the following about the oil viscosity at extreme temperatures:
  • 5W: The “W” means winter, and the accompanying number (“5” in this case) tells us that the oil has a low viscosity at 0ºF.
  • 20: The second number (“20” in this case) tells us that the oil is still relatively thin at 212ºF.
Your Kia Optima takes this kind of oil because it will cause the least
wear and tear
on your engine. You can use any brand or composition motor oil, so long as it meets the 5W-20 specifications required in your Optima’s owner’s manual.

How often to change the oil for a Kia Optima

Kia recommends changing conventional oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
Keep the following in mind when it comes to your Optima’s oil change schedule:
  • High-mileage drivers will need to shorten their oil change intervals—at least one every three months to keep the oil clean.
  • You may be able to wait as long as 7,500 to 10,000 miles before your next oil change when you pay extra for synthetic motor oil.
  • You should inspect your oil once a month or every other time you fill up your gas tank to monitor the oil level and check for any signs of bad oil.
The following are signs that your Kia Optima may be due for an early oil change:
  • Strange noises coming from the engine
  • New smells like oil, smoke, or burning
  • Discolored or dirty oil
  • Changes in your vehicle’s performance

How to change your oil and oil filter

You’ll to gather some
essential tools
to change your Kia Optima’s oil on your own:
  • A socket wrench
  • A drain pan
  • A filter wrench
  • A replacement filter
  • 5 quarts of 5W-20 oil
First, turn your car on for about five minutes to warm your engine up to the normal operating temperature. Then turn the engine off,
prop your car hood open
, and complete the following steps:
  1. Take off the oil fill cap.
  2. Get underneath the car so you can remove the oil drain bolt and washer and drain the old oil into the drain pan.
  3. Take out the old oil filter while the oil is draining.
  4. Install the new oil filter.
  5. Use a new washer to screw in the old drain bolt and tighten it to 29 lb-ft.
  6. Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap.
  7. Turn your car back on for a few minutes, checking for leaks while the new oil circulates.
  8. Turn the engine off and check the oil level with your dipstick to confirm that you’ve added enough.
  9. Reset your Kia Optima’s
    oil change light
so you'll be alerted the next time you need fresh oil.
Do not dump dirty oil on the ground or put it in your garbage can: Put the oil in a sealed container while you clean up so you can take it to a local recycling center to properly dispose of it.
